  • The high school golf season started in Colorado on Aug. 9. As usual golfers of the Santa Fe League are busy right off the bat. After just three days of official practice the Trojans traveled on thursday to the Santa Fe League Championship. As usual this tournament was played at Hollydot Golf Course in Colorado City. Of the five teams competing here, Las Animas was only good enough for a fourth place finish with a team score of 316. Individually Senior Brenden Garcia was medalist for the trojans with a 100, Sophmore Josh Japhet was next scoring a 104, and Senior Justice Pryor and newcomer Junior Bubba Martinez each posted a 112.

The next day found the golfers in Fowler for their invitational. With over twice as many teams here the competition was much stiffer. Eleven teams would post team scores and the Trojans posted an improved 295 good enough for a respectable fifth place finish. Here Japhet continued to shoot well carding a 96 for team honors. Pryor was second to break 100 coming in with a 99. Martinez came in with an even 100, and Garcia shot a 103.

The Trojans were busy this week too with a tournament in Lamar on Monday. Tuesday at La Junta for the Swink tournament and Friday in Eads to finish the second week of their season. When all the golfers get everything turned in to attend practice the roster will have 12 golfers, one of the biggest teams in recent years. Making the squad very competitive for the top spots.
