In their lightest weekend in weeks, the McClave girls steamrolled Karval 72-30 on Jan. 29 in McClave in their only game of the week. The win moved the Lady Cards to 13-1 on the year and 4-0 in District 2 play.
The Cards got off on the right foot, jumping out to a 17-4 first quarter lead behind nine points from senior post Adrianne Cline. It was more of the same in the second quarter, as McClave scored 16 points and led 33-6 at halftime. "It was a pretty first half," said Cardinal head coach Dick Peecher. "We only had six turnovers, moved the ball well offensively, and ran the court well too. Basketball is fun to watch when it is played like that."
Junior post Sydney Curley had a big second half, as Peecher moved players in and out of the lineup. The Cardinals were led by Cline who finished with a season high 18 points, while Curley countered with 14 points. Cline added 12 rebounds in another very solid performance by the 6 foot senior. Senior Jordan Melgoza had a strong floor game, as she was the third Lady Card in double figures with 10 points. Melgoza added six rebounds, five assists, and four steals. McClave played without junior Karlee Stuart, out with strep throat.
"We are getting better, I think. We are still working on getting in better shape, but these girls are playing well together. We seem to have a pretty good flow right now, but there are still lots of little things to improve on," added Peecher.
