The body of a man found in the Arkansas River in North La Junta Sunday has been identified as James Hawkins, 29, of Las Animas.

The body of a man found in the Arkansas River in North La Junta Sunday has been identified as James Hawkins, 29, of Las Animas.

The cause of death has not yet been determined and El Paso County is completing an autopsy.

Just after 7 a.m. on Sunday morning, Nov. 20, the Otero County Sheriff’s Office received a 911 call from a citizen in the area about a deceased male, unresponsive in the river, according to the Colorado Bureau of Investigation which was called in to assist the Otero County Sheriff’s Department in the investigation. The location of the man was near La Junta at Colorado State Highways 109 and 50 near the North La Junta bridge.

Law enforcement officials were on scene for many hours.

At this time, officials said there are no suspects and there is no danger to the public.

The Otero County Sheriff’s Office and Colorado Bureau of Investigation are leading the investigation.
