The Las Animas Lady Trojans will begin representing the city of Las Animas on the court in the next few weeks. The Lady Trojans, coached by Angela Magana, assisted by Laura LaBarge, look to capitalize on a changing landscape in the Santa Fe League.
The Ladies, led by seniors Haylie Stwalley, Fabiola Hernandez and Robin Fritz, will look to play a faster paced game to take advantage of their speed and ability to cause turnovers for quick baskets. Aided by juniors Leah Vida, Angelica Martinez, and Adrianna Maes, the starting five of the Lady Trojans looks to be feisty to say the least.
Coach Magana, when asked about starters, was disappointed that Valerie Martinez, who had a knee surgery during volleyball, will be out for the basketball season as well. "Her presence on the court will be missed," Magana explained. "And her leadership on and off the court will be a void someone will have to step up and fill."
According to Coach, there will be a lot of young talent across the valley this year and some strong teams developing quickly. The Lady Trojans look to be one of those teams that can shift their style, and emerge from the quagmire of a changing league.
The Lady Trojans begin their home campaign on Dec. 9 against the Custer County Bobcats. The varsity game is set to start at 7 p.m.
