1929 - 2016

Ted Kuhns passed away Dec. 12, 2016, at the Bent County HealthCare Center. A Memorial Service will be held at 10 a.m. Friday, Dec. 16, at the First Baptist Church.

Funeral services will be entrusted to Johnson-Romero Funeral Home.

Theodore William Kuhns was born in Clarion County, Pennsylvania, on April 14, 1929, the son of William Wade and Flora Belle (Davis) Kuhns. He was raised on the family farm. He graduated from Clarion High School in 1947 and enrolled in Clarion State Teachers' College. Later he transferred to Penn State College. When Uncle Sam called, he joined the U.S. Navy and was assigned to the FDR Aircraft Carrier during the Korean conflict. He married Barbara Heasley on May 30, 1953, in Reno, Pennsylvania.

Following his service to his country, he enrolled in Pittsburgh Institute of Mortuary Science. He embarked on a career as a funeral director in Titusville, Pennsylvania, and later in Clintonville, Pennsylvania. In 1974, he moved his family to Las Animas, Colorado, where he was employed by Almont to run the Powell Funeral Home. Ted bought the home and it became the Powell-Kuhns Mortuary. Ted was active in the Lions Club and the Chamber of Commerce.

He was a member of the First Baptist Church.

Following his retirement, he and Barbara bought a mountain home where they enjoyed their summers with family and friends.

Ted is survived by his wife, Barbara; daughter, Pamela (Nate) Valdez of Las Animas, Colorado; sons, David (Carol) Kuhns of Billings, Montana, Douglas Kuhns (Elin Ora) of Lamar, Colorado; and Donald (Shelly) Kuhns of Pueblo West, Colorado.

He was preceded in death by his only sister, Marcella (Joe) Hackett of Levittown, Pennsylvania.
