A Memorial Mass for Cosme Gallegos Jr. was held at 10 a.m. Friday, Jan. 13, 2017 at St. Mary's Catholic Church in Las Animas, Colorado. Father Henry Wertin officiated. A Rosary/Scripture service took place at 9:30 a.m., also at the church. Inurnment followed at the Fort Lyon National Cemetery. Military rites were provided by VFW Post # 2411 and American Legion District #1 Post #6.
Cosme John Gallegos Jr. was born on March 1, 1953, to Cosme Sr. and Susie (Esquibel) Gallegos in Denver, Colorado, and passed away on Jan. 10, 2017, in Las Animas, Colorado, at the age of 63.
Cosme was a proud United States Marine who served during the Vietnam conflict. He and his wife of 37 years, Evelyn, had three children and 12 grandchildren. He enjoyed spending time with all his grandchildren, James (Amber) Acosta, Frankie Acosta, Laura Acosta, Charlie (Randy) Cruzan, Samantha (Angel) Palmer, CJ (Bre) Gallegos, Katelyn Marmon, Keith Gallegos, Taylor Marmon, Richard Gallegos, Jaydon Gallegos, and Embree Gallegos. He also loved talking on the phone with his goddaughter, Juanita Stollsteimer. Cosme loved spending time fishing and playing pool. He was always available to listen if you needed someone to talk to.
Cosme is survived by Evelyn Gallegos of Las Animas, Colorado; his children, Cosme (Tammie) Gallegos III of La Junta, Colorado, Angel Gallegos (Philip Marmon) of Pueblo, Colorado, Felipe (Bridget) Gallegos of Las Animas, Colorado; sisters, Mela (Ross) Nuanes of Denver, Colorado, Ida (Neal) Elliston of Muskogee, Oklahoma; his grandchildren and great-grandchildren.
Cosme was preceded in death by his parents, Cosme and Susie (Esquibel) Gallegos, and brothers, Walter and Richard Gallegos.
