All of the local high school wrestling teams were at regional tournaments this past weekend and there are a total of 47 local grapplers who have qualified for their respective state tournament, which will take place this week in Denver.
Class 3A Region 4 Tournament
ELIZABETH — The La Junta High School wrestling team finished in sixth place at the Class 3A Region 4 Tournament at Elizabeth High School.
Five Tigers qualified for state. Of those five, four were finalists and three of them won region championships.
Isaiah Gamez won the 113-pound championship as he pinned Pueblo Central's Jimmy Gonzales in 19 seconds. Dax Bender won at 160 pounds as he scored a 10-4 decision over Elizabeth's Abe Leonard. Will Tyler took the 182-pound championship with a 7-1 decision over Trinidad's Casey Hand.
Deron Bletson was also a finalist at 152 pounds, but he was defeated by Jefferson's Brandon Onofre by an 8-5 decision.
The final La Junta state qualifier was Noah Barrett, who was third at 120 pounds.
Juan Garcia finished fifth at 145, but did not qualify for state. Also competing for the Tigers were Antonio Moreno (132), Wyatt Hoeppner (170), Nick Martinez (22) and Lino Castrejon (285).
Lamar won the tournament with 221 points. Fort Lupton was second with 156 1/2, Florence was third with 152 1/2, Monte Vista was fourth with 143 1/2, Jefferson was fifth with 133 and La Junta was sixth with 128.
Rounding out the team scoring were Woodland park with 95, The Classical Academy with 91, Pueblo Central with 89 1/2, Elizabeth with 77 1/2, Salida with 73, Trinidad with 66, Manitou Springs with 61 and Colorado Springs Christian and James irwin, both with 15.
Class 2A Region 4 Tournament
PUEBLO — All 14 of Rocky Ford High School's wrestlers qualified for the state tournament and the Meloneers easily won the Class 2A Region 4 Tournament at Colorado State University-Pueblo's Massari Arena.
Nine of the Meloneers were individual champions. That list includes Jacob Rodriguez (106), Dillon Jaramillo (113), Joe Barela (126), Cody Venem (132), Carlos Magdaleno (160), Diego Reyes (170), Ricky Preciado (195), Enriquez Romero (220) and Greg Garcia (285).
The remaining Rocky state qualifiers were Carlos Romo, who was second at 138, Santino Mendoza, who was third at 120, Chris Maes, who was third at 145, Dylan Miell, who was third at 152 and Jesse Tapia, who was third at 182.
Crowley County placed third and it qualified seven wrestlers to the state meet. Colton Gruntorad was the only charger to advance to the finals, but he took second at 132 pounds.
Also qualifying for Crowley County were Jerod Bauer, who was third at 138, P.J. Schurr, who was third at 160, Tristan Laver, who was third at 195, Tanner Howells, who was fourth at 120, Hunter Watkins, who was fourth at 220 and Cameron Buford, who was fourth at 285.
Two other Chargers came close to qualifying, however, Ryan Rivera (152) and Travis Sellers (170) were both defeated in wrestle-backs.
Swink finished in fifth place and it had three state qualifiers. Adam Nolte was the Lions' sole regional champion as he took the title at 120 pounds.
The other Swink qualifiers were Brandon Nelson, who was third at 126 and Justin Tucker, who was third at 285.
Las Animas finished 14th and it had one state qualifier in Jacob Roybal, who was third at 220 pounds.
Two other Trojans came close to qualifying. Jacob Martinez was defeated in a wrestle-back at 132 and Latrell Stine was fifth at 126.
The Meloneers scored 319 points. Its closest competition was Peyton, which scored 194 — 125 points behind.
Crowley County scored 110, followed by Holly with 93 1/2, Swink with 79, Kiowa with 76, Ellicott with 74, Baca County with 67 1/2, Cheyenne Wells with 62, Eads with 61, Calhan with 46, Miami-Yoder with 45, Simla with 42 and Las Animas with 37.
Class 2A Region 2 Tournament
WESTCLIFFE — Fowler finished in second place and McClave was third at the Class 2A Region 2 Tournament at Custer County High School.
Seven Grizzlies qualified for the state meet and that list included four individual regional champions. The champions included Seth McFall (106), Dylan Palomino (138), Dahlton McGhee (160) and Ty Sigler (220).
The rest of the Fowler state qualifiers were Tyson Martinez, who was second at 182, Sean Graham, who was third at 145 and Seth Damgaard, who was fourth at 170.
McClave qualified six for the state tournament and it had one regional champion in James Steerman (145).
The remaining Cardinals who qualified for state were Ken Cox, who was second at 195, Dawson Roesch, who was third at 160, Jaime Ibarra, who was third at 170, Sam Cox, who was third at 182 and Jayce Bauer, who was third at 220.
Manzanola finished in a tie for ninth place and it had two qualifiers. Both Bobcats who qualified were regional champions as Ryan Saine won at 170 pounds and J.D. Chamblin won at 285.
John Mall was the regional champion with 209 points — two points ahead of Fowler. McClave scored 152, followed by Del Norte with 146 1/2, Rye with 101 1/2, Custer County with 87, Dolores Huerta with 78, Centennial/Sierra Grande with 76, Manzanola and Sanford both with 48, Center with 46, Hanover with 26 and Mountain Valley with 14.
State meet begins Thursday
All of the state wrestling tournaments will begin on Thursday and end on Saturday. All tournaments will take place at the Pepsi Center.
