Las Animas School District will partner with the Bent County Sheriff's Department, Bent County Fire and Ambulance Department and Homeland Security for an active shooter drill. The drill is scheduled for March 15.

The active shooter drill will be conducted at the high school level, which will result in high school and junior high buildings implementing "lockdown" procedures. The elementary will implement the "lockout" procedures.

"We conduct these drills because it is important for staff, students, emergency personnel and parents to understand the process for lockdown, lockout and reunification. Secondary and elementary buildings will practice the 'reunification' process with parents and guardians of students in the tenth, eighth, seventh, Jumpstart, first and fifth grades. Parents were given information during parent teacher conferences about the reunification process," said a school spokesperson.

There will be multiple forms of communication to notify parents of the drill. The Sheriff's Departments will send out a communication and the school district will send out a communication to parents. If you have questions or concerns, please contact your building principal.
