The time honored tradition, Santa Fe Trail Day, is quickly approaching.

The Las Animas High School Student Council has been planning the 83rd Annual Santa Fe Trail Day since September of this school year. This year's event will be held April 28, 29, and 30. As always, Friday will comprise most of the traditional events with the students. Many groups and organizations help the students by holding events during the weekend all throughout the community. This year's activities promise to be lots of fun!

The theme chosen by the students for this year's event was submitted by Kayla Valdez. It is: The Santa Fe Trail, The Story of a Great Highway!

Students prepared artwork and competed against each other for the design of the 2017 Santa Fe Trail Day T-shirt. Currently the winning design is being chosen for the T-shirts. The winners and T-shirt design will be available soon.

Queen candidates were chosen by each high school class in January. They have begun working on their dresses and accessories. The 2017 candidates are: senior class - Savannah Salas; daughter of Juanita Avila and granddaughter of Rita Magana; junior class - Makayla Huffman, daughter of Sarah and Andrew Huffman; sophomore class - Abbey Elliott; daughter of Amber and Thomas VanSchoiack; and freshman class - Megan VanEgmond, daughter of Charlie and Jodie VanEgmond.
