The La Junta High School girls' tennis team was shut out for the first time this season as the Lady Tigers lost to Vanguard 7-0 Tuesday at Tippy Martinez Park.

"Vanguard has a good program," said LJ coach Rod Bickel. "I think we played better than the score indicated. I was more frustrated after Monday night's loss to Salida than I was after today's loss to Vanguard. I think we played a little bit better. We had some more solid strokes and we definitely had more effort today."

The Lady Coursers also won every set, however, the No. 3 doubles team of Emily Ramirez and Camryn Gonzales came the closest to winning a set when they played Tawana Caine and Caolinn Mulbrey. The Lady Courser duo won the first set 6-4, but the second set was decided in a tie-breaker. Caine and Mulbrey won the tie-breaker 7-1 to win the set 7-6.

The No. 2 team of Madison Pryor and Lyssie Aguilar lost to Madi Sanchez and Mia Jackson 6-1, 6-2, and the No. 4 team of Ana Mathews and Sophie Russell was defeated by Rachel Leasure and Luna Heineke 6-0, 6-2.

The No. 1 doubles team of Kali Sanchez and Kalee DuBois was defeated by Nicole Alderman and Tasey Davis 6-0, 6-0.

The singles matches had Aimee Wallner lose to Delaney Wilklow 6-0, 6-0, Lexie Smith lost to Krista Davis 6-1, 6-0, and Maria Baca lost to Deli Jackson 6-0, 6-0.

La Junta (3-4, 2-3 Tri-Peaks) will travel to Pueblo County on Saturday.

"Pueblo County is the same as Vanguard," Bickel said. "They're a good school and they're a good program. So Pueblo County is going to be another one to see how well we improve. I tell the girls as long as they improve every game, then they're on the right track."

The first matches begin at 9 a.m.
