The Bent County Democrat office has closed.

The newspaper, the Bent County Democrat, will continue to print weekly and will be your local source for community news as it has been for more than 100 years.

“It’s never easy to have to make these decisions, but I want everyone to know that we are dedicated to continuing community journalism in Las Animas,” said Publisher Candi Hill.

About 90 percent of the Bent County Democrat operations have been handled by the La Junta office for many years now and the remaining operations will merge with La Junta.

“It’s hard to support the community institution of a newspaper given today’s retail dynamics and dwindling population in small, rural communities. But fortunately, being published under common ownership with La Junta helps make it more efficient to do so. While we won’t have a physical office in Las Animas, the Democrat will continue as a community information resource. We ask for the community’s continued support of its newspaper financially and encourage residents, community leadership, the schools and businesses of Las Animas and McClave and surrounding areas to contribute news and information so it remains relevant and useful for readers.”
