Colorado Preservation Inc. recently recognized Former Bent County Commissioner Bill Long with a State Honor Award at their annual Awards dinner. A longtime history buff, Bill is especially passionate about the rich, colorful and important history of Bent County, the place his family has called home since 1899.

A lifetime resident of the Lower Arkansas Valley, Bill is an ardent supporter of historic preservation. During his three terms as a Bent County Commissioner, Bill and his fellow Commissioners Lynden Gill and Tom Wallace undertook a complete renovation of the 1889 Bent County Courthouse and were awarded the Governors Award for Historic Preservation in 2010 for the project. In 2013, in partnership with the Colorado Department of Local Affairs, Bent County reopened the 1867 era Fort Lyon preserving the historic fort while providing a new purpose and mission for the campus. In the summer of 2017, after nearly four years of planning and reconstruction work, two once vacant school buildings will be reopened after renovations. The 1949 Memorial School will serve as the Bent County Social Services offices and the 1939 Bent County High School will serve as the local community center, servicing all age groups of the community.

Colorado Preservation Inc. promotes historic preservation statewide by providing advocacy, education, outreach and preservation services to communities and individuals. The vision is to engage citizens statewide to honor and protect their heritage, to help them to build a sustainable future with historic places, and to inspire them to prioritize the past as legacy.
