The final regular season high school wrestling tournaments took place this past Saturday with action taking place in Buena Vista and Ordway.
Tri-Peaks League Tournament
BUENA VISTA — The La Junta High School wrestling team finished in fourth place at the Tri-Peaks League Tournament, which took place at Buena Vista High School's Dorothea Willey Gym.
The Tigers had nine individual placers; however, they didn't have a tournament champion.
Finishing the highest for La Junta was Mitchell Peabody, who took second place at 195 pounds.
Four Tigers took third place in Antonio Moreno (145), Wyatt Buhr (182), Zeke Rangel (220) and Alexavier Vigil (285). Cisco Perez (113) and Brandon Nelson (120) both took fourth and Benny Diego Gonzales (106) and Wyatt Hoeppner (170) both finished in fifth place.
Lamar won the tournament with 248 points, followed by Buena Vista with 190. Florence was third with 166, La Junta was fourth with 112 1/2, and Salida was fifth with 85. Rounding out the team scoring were Colorado Springs Christian with 66 1/2, Rye with 51, Manitou Springs with 43, and James Irwin with 24.
Crowley County Charger Invitational
ORDWAY — Five local schools took part in the Charger Invitational, which took place at Crowley County high School's Charger Gym.
The County Line Rivals won the meet with 144 points and they had 11 placers including three individual champions. Winning their weight divisions were Trevor Randel (152), Jaime Ibarra (170), and Ken Cox (285).
Finishing second were A.J. Wilk (160) and Dawson Roesch (182). Aiden Michael took third at 132, Samuel Adams was fourth at 120, Jonathan Burbank was fourth at 126, Cade Zordell was fifth at 145, Jake Krentz was sixth at 106, and Sam Wollert was sixth at 138.
Crowley County placed second with 104 points. Seven Chargers went to the award stand including two individual champions in Tanner Howells (132) and Adam Schultz (160).
Ryan Rivera was second at 138, Ryan Rivera was second at 145, Jared Bauer was second at 152, Zach Auchterlonie was third at 145, and Isaiah Camacho was sixth at 113.
Rocky Ford sent some junior varsity wrestlers to this tournament and it finished 12th with three placers. David Medina was third at 152, Noel Rocha was fourth at 106, and Sebastian Ortega was fifth at 138.
Fowler finished 15th and it had two place winners in Tyson Martinez, who won the 182-pound championship, and Tyler Mullins, who was third at 285.
Las Animas placed 19th and it had a single placer in Andrew Rockwell, who was sixth at 145.
Regional tournaments are this week
The local wrestling teams will be in regional action this week with tournaments taking place in Pueblo, La Junta, and Sanford. The top four finishers in each weight division will qualify for next week's state wrestling tournaments in Denver.
Class 3A Region 4
La Junta will be in Pueblo for the Class 3A Region 4 Tournament at Pueblo Central High School.
Other teams in the tournament include Centauri, Colorado Springs Christian, Florence, Fort Lupton, James Irwin, Jefferson, Manitou Springs, Monte Vista, Pueblo Central, Salida, Sheridan, The Classical Academy, Trinidad, and Woodland Park.
Class 2A Region 4
Four local teams will compete at the Class 2A Region 4 Tournament, which will occur at Otero Junior College's MeDivitt Center.
Crowley County, Las Animas, Rocky Ford, and Swink will represent the area at this tournament. Also in the tournament are Baca County, Calhan, Cheyenne Wells, Colorado Deaf and Blind, Ellicott, Holly, Kiowa, Lotus School for Excellence, Miami-Yoder, Peyton, and Simla.
Class 2A Region 2
Fowler and County Line will participate in the Class 2A Region 2 Tournament, which will take place at Sanford High School's gym.
Also in the competition will be Antonito, Center, Centennial/Sierra Grande, Custer County, Del Norte, Dolores Huerta, Hanover, John Mall, La Veta, Mountain Valley, Rye, Sanford, and Sargent.
