LAKEWOOD — The first day of the Colorado High School Activities Association track and field meets was completed Thursday at Jefferson County Stadium with several local athletes scoring points for their teams.
La Junta High School has scored two points on the boys’ side and its only scoring came from Vicente Ramirez, who was eighth in the discus with a throw of 140-0.
Also competing in the discus was Noah Sedillo, who finished in 14th place with a toss of 132-5.
Crowley County High School is second in Class 2A after the first day with 12 points. The Chargers’ scoring came from Tyler Schwartz, who was fourth in the long jump at 20-0, and Lane Walter, who was fourth in the shot put at 45-2 1/2.
Walter and Schwartz, along with Brannon Harris and Nathaniel Aguilar also competed in the 4x200-meter relay preliminaries, but the team did not finish.
The Lady Chargers are seventh with 6 1/2 points after the first day with Rylee Haynes tying for third in the high jump at 5-0.
Haynes was also second in the 100-meter hurdle preliminaries in 15.83 and she advanced to finals on Saturday.
Rocky Ford has seven points in the boys’ meet. David Trujillo was ninth in the long jump at 19-6 1/2.
Also scoring for the Meloneers were Chris Gonzales, Cody Danley, Joaquin Munoz and Noel Lopez, who were fourth in the 4x800 in 8:21.19.
Trujillo also competed in two preliminary events. He was sixth in the 100-meter dash in 11.38 seconds to advance to the finals. However, he was 11th in the 200 preliminaries in 23.38 and was eliminated.
Also competing for the Rocky boys were Gonzales, Cristian Gauna, Isaiah Hernandez and Seth Havens, who were 14th in the 4x200 preliminnaries and they too have been eliminated.
For the Lady Meloneers, who have one point after the first day, Abigail Snyder, Jacklynn Snyder, Kaya Kurtz-Merwin and Katie Preciado were ninth in the 4x800 in 10:37.58.
Fowler High School has no points on either the boys’ or girls’ side.
The Lady Grizzlies; however, got a fourth place finish from Lexi Van Sickle, Samantha Graham, Jacquelin Alvey and Ryanna Pruet in the, 4x200 preliminaries in 1:49.72 and they advanced to the finals.
The same team was 14th in the 800-meter sprint medley preliminaries in 1:57.13 and was eliminated. Van Sickle was also 14th in the 400 preliminaries in 1:02.78 and 17th in the 200 preliminaries in 27.61 and was eliminated in both events.
Two Grizzlies ran in the 110-meter hurdles preliminaries but were both eliminated. Orin Carnes was 13th in 16.87 and Brand Sharp was 19th in 18.42.
Swink has not competed in any events after the first day.
McClave High School has six points in the girls’ meet after one day with Makenzie Watts placing fourth in the discus at 111-7.
The Cardinals had not scored after the first day. Ian Beckett was the only McClave boy to compete and he finished 10th in the long jump at 17-9 3/4.
The Kim/Branson co-op boys team has four points with Zephyn Mason taking sixth place in the long jump at 19-0 1/4.
The Lady Mustangs had not competed after the first day.
State continues today
The state meets continue today and will conclude on Saturday.
