Terry Smith passed away peacefully in his home in Ulysses, Kansas, on June 28, 2018. Terry was born in Las Animas, Colorado, to Maude Ellen (Kerr) and George H. Smith, Jr. Terry’s grandparents, George and Nora, homesteaded the Centennial Smith Ranch in Bent County in 1914. Terry attended schools in Las Animas then joined the U.S. Army in Denver on December 1, 1971. Terry proudly served the in the U. S. Army, following in the footsteps of his father and brother. Terry received the National Defense Service Medal, was an expert in grenades and rifles, and was stationed in Germany during the Vietnam War. Terry was honorably discharged on December 4, 1973. Terry worked as a driller and roughneck in the oil fields all over the world. When not in the oilfields, he was employed as a welder in Kansas and Oklahoma. Terry loved fishing and would often go to Mexico for the offshore fishing, often telling his brother George that he donated his catch to a nearby orphanage. Terry also enjoyed trout fishing in Montana and Wyoming. His life style may have caused many medical problems, but Terry lived his life on his own terms. Terry is survived by his brother George and wife Karen, nieces Valerie Phillips and Cindy McDonald, and nephew Jeff Turner. Terry was preceded in death by his parents; two sisters Patty and Linda; and a brother Douglas. Graveside services will be held at the Peaceful Valley Cemetery at the Smith Ranch at 11:00 a.m. on Friday, October 19, 2018 with full military honors.
