Why are you running for school board?
“I am running for school board because I am committed to our community and I firmly believe that providing a quality education for our children. This will enable our youth to gain skills and develop their character, helping them to become successful adults.”
What experience do you bring to the position?
“My experience as city council member and various boards dealing with budgets, insurance and personnel issues.”
What do you feel are the major issues facing the board?
“Major issues facing the board are constrained budgets limiting the District ability to offer wider variety of programs and to attract and retain quality teachers. Parental involvement is also very important.”
How will you address those issues?
“I feel the issues will be addressed by having the Board, administrators, teachers and students working as a team towards appropriate resolutions.”
Do you support a four day or five day school week?
“During the 4-day week, children are at school for eight hours and when you add the time needed for homework, it makes for a long, tiring day. During the three days off, children may have difficulty retaining the lessons they learned during the four days of school. I know it is difficult for parents that work to provide adequate child-care for their children on Friday. Weighing the pros and cons, I prefer the 5-day week.”
What are your feelings about the new community center?
“I have been involved in the planning process and I support the School District, City of Las Animas and Bent County Commissioners in their endeavor for a new Community Center. I feel that it would be an asset to the residents of our community because it will serve a broader segment of residents as well as enhancing the appearance of the area.”
What would you do to improve CSAP scores in the district?
“I feel that going to a 5-day week will provide more time for students to be exposed to more educational material. This will, in turn, help to improve the CSAP scores. I think teachers and administrators can serve as valuable guides to reach the goals desired.”
What would you do to balance the budget?
“I would evaluate costs of programs, seek other funds from grants and other sources.”
How would you encourage teachers to stay in the district?
“I feel that we need to provide our teachers with incentives as they provide quality education and positive learning environment for our children.”
What needs to be done to improve student achievement?
“I feel that providing students with a comfortable environment with quality teachers, while still demanding good effort and good behavior is key to improving student achievement.”
