Lamar Community College sophomore Brian England was recognized as Colorado’s 2009 New Century Scholar at a reception in Denver on March 11. Brian earned the honor as Colorado’s highest-scoring student in the All-USA Academic Team/Coca-Cola All-State team competition. The award is sponsored by the Coca-Cola Foundation, Phi Theta Kappa (PTK) International Society, and USA Today. For the honor, Brian received a $2,000 stipend provided by the Coca-Cola Scholars Foundation and Coca-Cola Foundation. As a New Century Scholar Brian was honored at a reception held during the American Association of Community Colleges Annual Convention in Phoenix on April 4.
While in Phoenix Brian was also recognized as a 2009 Coca-Cola Gold Scholar. Selection was based on scores earned in the All-USA Academic Team competition. The Coca-Cola Scholar program is sponsored by the Coca-Cola Scholars Foundation and is administered by Phi Theta Kappa Honor Society. As a Gold Scholar Brian received a certificate, gold medallion, a check for $1,500 and he was listed in a special section of USA Today on April 6.
Brian was born and raised in Lamar and is LCC’s PTK Chapter president, a leader of the college’s Fellowship of Christian Students and an active member of LCC’s Ag Club. He will graduate from LCC in May with an AGS Ag-Business Transfer degree. England plans to transfer to a university to obtain a dual degree in Ag Business and Plant and Soil Science. Brian is the son of Bob and Janice England of Lamar and the grandson of Willard and Maxine Kasza of McClave.
