A $78,576 shortfall in the 2009-10 budget was discussed by the Las Animas School Board at their meeting on June 16.
"It was a very healthy discussion," said Superintendent Scott Cuckow.
The beginning fund balance for the district is $1,092,648, with revenues totaling $4,322,693 for a total of $5,415,341.
Expenditures for the district are $4,387,263 and appropriated contingency funds are $1,028,078, for a total of $5,429,347.
The ending fund balance is $1,014,072.
Expenditures include instruction, pupil services, instructional staff, general administration, school administration, business support services, operation and maintenance, pupil transportation and lunch fund subsidies.

The school board is conducting a special meeting at 5:30 p.m. June 25 to address the preliminary budget. The meeting will be conducted in the middle school commons area.
