The Lady Trojans continued their win streak last weekend as their schedule took them to both Walsenburg and Hoehne in Santa Fe League matches.
On Thursday, Jan. 19, the Ladies traveled to Walsenburg to face the Lady Panthers of John Mall. In the usually one-sided matchup, Coach Chas Phillips chose to play his starters for a few minutes of the game, giving the Lady Trojans a 17-0 first quarter lead, then played the rest of the varsity squad in the eventual 65-18 romp of the Lady Panthers.
In the blowout, Grace Miller, Haley Martinez, and Caitlin Johnson all contributed 12 points.
On the following Saturday, Jan. 21, the Lady Trojans traveled to Hoehne for a more challenging match with the Lady Farmers.
The first quarter saw both teams working the ball around the court looking for good shots. The Lady Trojans came out ahead in the first; 15-10. In the second, the match was more closely contested, as the Lady Farmers would go on a scoring run, then the Lady Trojans would respond. This happened twice as the Lady Trojans added three to their lead and went to the locker room up 30-22.
As the second half began, so did the Lady Trojans’ full-court press. Their press has forced many turnovers by opponents this season resulting in easy buckets. Such was the case in this third quarter. With the press, the Lady Trojans only allowed 7 points and scored 17 of their own. With an 18 point lead, the Lady Trojans cruised in the fourth quarter only allowing the Lady Farmers to gain back two points. At the final buzzer, the score was heavily in favor of the Lady Trojans: 57-41.
In the victory, Martinez led all scorers with 22 and Miller added 14 and pulled down 10 rebounds for a double-double.
Jan. 23-28 is Winter Sports Week for the Las Animas community and the Lady Trojans will host both Fowler and Rocky Ford in Trojan Gym. The game against Fowler is Friday night, Jan. 27, at 5 p.m., and the game against Rocky Ford is Saturday afternoon, Jan. 28, at 2 p.m.
