This last weekend was one full of anticipation for Trojan basketball as the boys looked to improve and the girls looked to win a third championship in a row in the La Junta Shootout.

The first game for the girls was a close one against the Sanford Indians. Both teams went down to the wire and the Lady Trojans had just enough left in the tank to outlast the Lady Indians for Las Animas’ first win of the season. No stats were available for this game.

Their next match in the winner’s bracket was against the Lady Grizzlies of Fowler. In this league match, the Lady Trojans came out and dominated. Two Lady Trojans, Grace Miller and Caitlin Johnson, scored in double figures, and Johnson also pulled down eight rebounds. With the 59-22 win, the Lady Trojans found themselves in the championship game against the Lady Savages of Lamar.

In the low scoring game, the Lady Trojans were led by Johnson who scored 20, and Haley Martinez who put in 11. Those two combined for 31 of the Ladies’ 39 points. That 39, however, would be enough for the Lady Trojans to hoist the Shootout championship trophy for the third consecutive year.

With their three-game win streak, the Lady Trojans are now 3-1 and will host the Lady Farmers of Hoehne on Saturday, Dec. 17. Game time is set for 2 p.m. in Trojan Gym in Las Animas.
