Two local government officials were allegedly threatened by a Colorado Springs man by email which was sent on Dec. 22.
The Colorado State Patrol in conjunction with The State of Colorado Human Services is investigating a traffic crash involving a van and tractor-trailer that resulted in six fatalities in Cheyenne County. The crash occurred on Colorado 287 approximately 2.5 miles south of Kit Carson at about 7:30 a.m., Oct. 13.
At the Aug. 24 Bent County Commissioners meeting, Bent County Sheriff David Encinias requested the lifting of the fire ban. The board agreed, but would like people doing controlled burns to call the sheriff’s office in advance to prevent false alarms for the fire department.
Marcos Ruiz, Las Animas, was apprehended Aug. 9 after a high speed chase which lasted almost two hours through the streets of Las Animas, over county roads, on Highway 101 where speeds reached 90 mph and through the river bottom and back to Highway 50 where he was apprehended.
Joey Lucero of Las Animas was sentenced to 20 years in prison on Aug. 15 in Bent County Court by Judge Michael Schiferl. The sentence was for murder in the second degree for the murder of his father almost one year ago.
The annual fireworks display put on by the Las Animas Volunteer Fire Department has been approved for this year. The firemen will drive up and down the streets on Thursday, June 30, and Friday, July 1, to collect monetary donations for fireworks.
Due to the hot dry conditions, and the continuing danger of wildfires in Bent County, a fire ban has been placed into effect by the Bent County Commissioners.
It was a big drug bust, according to David Encinias, sheriff of Bent County. If allowed to mature, this would have been about $171,300 worth of drugs. He and two other deputies destroyed 1,713 marijuana plants being grown near County Road GG and County Road 3.
Bent County Sheriff David Encinias said the return of two buffalo rugs valued at $1,200 came as a result of joint efforts from his department, Otero Sheriff, National Parks, and ATF, Alcohol, Tobacco and Firearm Division. The rugs were stolen in a burglary in August of 2010.
A Fire Ban has been initiated in Bent County and is effective immediately. Conditions remain dry and potentially dangerous.

Officials in Bent County are in the mop-up phase of fighting the fire.
A recent rash of business burglaries brought a group of angry citizens to the March 8 Las Animas City Council meeting. Complaints ranged from not enough police coverage at night, no follow up as far as solving the crimes, and citizens not feeling that something was being done by the local officers.
A total of five Las Animas businesses have been burglarized in the last four to five weeks.
Bent County Sheriff’s Deputy Jeff Wright cited Dee Bewley of 349 Cottonwood with possession of more than 8 oz. of marijuana and cultivation of marijuana on Jan 12.
