A home located at 534 Fifth Street in Las Animas was a total loss after a fire Wednesday afternoon, according to Las Animas Volunteer Fire Department Spokesman Jonathan Kindell.
The home, owned by Joshua Lockhart, caught fire at 4:51 p.m. and firefighters were on the scene three minutes later, Kindell said.
“Everything’s totaled,” Kindell said.
Kindell could not confirm an official cause for the fire
While no humans were injured in the blaze, an iguana and two cats are known dead and a third one is missing and can’t be found, according to Danielle Cristyeager, former resident of the home.
Cristyeager had moved out of the home three months ago.
Some of her possessions were still in the house and were lost in the blaze, as were clothes and toys owned by her daughter Alexa Durley.
Cristyeager said a heat lamp that was being used to warm an iguana cage may have ignited a chess board.
The three bedroom, two story home is a total loss, she said.
