A large grassfire flared up Monday night at Treetop, a prairie grassland four miles west of Hasty and north of U. S. 50
Fire fighters responded from Las Animas, Hasty and McClave, said a deputy who was keeping unauthorized traffic from going north on County Road 20.
The fire line appeared to be in a northwest to southeast angle.
The fire alarm went off about 7:30 p.m. and an hour later it appeared that the northwest segment was under control. However orange flames continued to flicker into the night sky along the more southeastern segment of the fire line.
Bent County has been under a fire ban since last year after a series of controlled burns kept flaring out of control, taxing the resources and energy of county volunteer fire fighters.
The cause of the Monday night blaze was not immediately known.
