The City of Las Animas and Bent County Road and Bridge crew have been working together to chip seal several streets in Las Animas. By working together, they save a lot of money and it is much appreciated. “They do a really good job,” Ken Wagner, director of Public Works for the city of Las Animas said.
In order to get the job done it takes a lot of dedication from the work crews - these are long, hot work days.
The county brings in a distribution truck to lay the oil. The chip spreader attaches to the distribution truck and spreads the chips. Then a roller packs the two components down. After the process is complete, a sweeper will sweep up the loose chips.
The Light and Power department helped prepare for the project by trimming the trees.
Other preparations include taping the water valves, “It takes a while to get it ready,” Wagner said.
The city pays the county for their services. The chips come from Carter Inc. and the oil is brought in from Denver.
Several streets are done each year. The focus this year was Sixth Street, with a few other streets being chip sealed.
