Bent County Sheriff David Encinias said the return of two buffalo rugs valued at $1,200 came as a result of joint efforts from his department, Otero Sheriff, National Parks, and ATF, Alcohol, Tobacco and Firearm Division. The rugs were stolen in a burglary in August of 2010. Firearms were also stolen from Bent’s Fort at about the same time.

Encinias said the owner of Gray’s Coors Tavern in Pueblo had seen an article about the thefts and called law enforcement to report that one of the rugs had been offered to him. An AFT official found the other rug at a Pawn Shop in Pueblo.

Jeff Wilcoxin of La Junta and a juvenile were charged with the burglaries. Wilcoxin is in Federal Prison and the juvenile has been found guilty and is serving time, according to Encinias. Many of the guns stolen have also been recovered and were found hidden on the Arkansas River bottom after the robbery.

Carrillo identified the rugs as belonging to two buildings at Boggsville. “The rugs have oil in them and left a pattern on the floor which exactly matched the rugs found,”  he said.
