A McClave student was in a Denver area hospital this week, recovering from surgery after suffering a gunshot wound.
Nolan Downey, 15, apparently suffered a self-inflicted gunshot wound Sunday about 8:30 p.m., according to Prowers County Undersheriff Ron Trrowbridge. The shooting was still under investigation Tuesday.
Downey will be a freshman student this month, however the staff at McClave School had been informally told that Nolan planned to transfer to Lamar although no paperwork had been received yet.
Trowbridge said the incident occurred five miles north of Lamar on Road NN. Sources said the shooting was believed to have occurred at his mother's home. Downey had been living south of McClave with his father.
Local sources said Downey had successfully gotten through surgery and was in one of the Denver One hospitals in metropolitan Denver
