The Las Animas City Council Tuesday night voted to raise trash collection fees by $1 a month per household to offset rising costs.
The council also approved the annexation of 160 acres in the northeastern part of the city.
The annexation was initially prompted by ALCO's plans to build a new outlet in Las Animas on Bent Avenue. When ALCO backed out of the deal, the city went ahead with the annexation.
But the final approval was delayed until a map could be completed and final reviews could be completed.
The newly annexed area roughly runs north of First Street between Moore Ave. to a little west of Bent Avenue, or Highway 50. It then wraps around to the east to include the golf course.
Las Animas Oil, on the west side of the highway north of First Street, is the major commercial area being added by the expansion.
Councilman Peter Wybenga was the only council member to vote against the annexation.
