The Las Animas Elementary staff and students celebrated with dancing in the gym after receiving the Blue Ribbon School Award.
The award is prestigious and a great honor. It is only given to 413 schools each year throughout the country. The award was created in 1981 and originally only went to middle and high schools. The Las Animas school staff had to complete paperwork over the last five years demonstrating their improvement, dedication, and educational standards.
“Schools that receive the Blue Ribbon Award are examples of excellence,” said Principal Lana Gardner at last Friday’s award ceremony. “It is the highest honor a school can receive,” she added. All of the students were given blue ribbons and spent time cheering for their special honor. They finished up the celebration by observing a video of teachers dancing on the stage when they were awarded their award in Washington, D.C. Then students and staff all did a victory dance in the gym and cheered themselves for a job well done.
Susan Medina and Kolleen Howe, teachers in the elementary school, traveled to Washington, D.C., in the fall. They joined teachers across the nation as they cheerfully received the praise they deserved for their efforts.
