Jay Willard Showalter, 87, Las Animas, died Tuesday, April 20, 2010, at his home.
Jay was born March 11, 1923, in La Junta to Ancil O. and Bertha F. (Diller) Showalter. He was united in marriage to Anna Mae Birkey on Aug. 12, 1946, in Manson, Iowa.
He owned and operated Showalter Grain Elevator and Storage for many years and ran farming and ranching operations as well.
He is survived by his wife, Anna of Las Animas; two daughters, Martha Sue Martin of Agora Hills, Calif., Rebecca L. (Ron) Six of Las Animas; one sister, Norma Jean Brenneman of Wellman, Iowa; one brother, Ernest A. Showalter of Midland, Texas; five grandchildren; 18 great-grandchildren and two great-great-grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by two brothers, two sisters and a granddaughter, Brenda Six Downare.
Funeral services were held at 10 a.m., Monday, April 26 at the First United Methodist Church with the Rev. Carrie West officiating. Carrie Dean sang “In The Garden” and “Peace In The Valley,” accompanied by Duana Bourne, organist.
Pallbearers were Randy and Jennifer Martin, LoriAnn and Sean Strickland, Benda and Cody Downare, Sherri and Gary Fritz and Joey Six.
Interment was in the Las Animas Cemetery with Horber Funeral Chapel in charge of arrangements.
Those wishing to do so may make memorials to the Ark Valley Hospice.
