Daniel Elmer Maes, 54, died Nov. 4, 2009, at his home 14736 Road HH, Las Animas.
He was born June 8, 1955, at Jaroso, Colo., to Frank H. and Marcia (Garcia) Maes. He came to Las Animas from New Mexico in 1957. He was married to Freida Marie Jaramillo.
Daniel served in the U.S. Army, was a member of the National Guard in Las Animas and was a member of St. Mary’s Catholic Church. He was employed as a foreman in building management at the Fort Lyon VA Hospital and as a grounds supervisor at the Fort Lyon Department of Corrections.
He is survived by his wife, Freida Maes of the home; his mother, Marcia Maes of Las Animas; two sons, Frank E. (Melissa) Maes and Michael D. (Chelsey) Maes, both of Las Animas; three brothers, Wilbert Maes of Las Animas, Richard Maes of Coulee City, Wash., Jack Maes of Hasty; three sisters, Beulah Martinez of Las Animas, Bonnie Martinez of Las Animas, Sandra Maes of La Junta; and five grandchildren.
Rosary was recited at 9:30 a.m. with Mass at 10 a.m., Tuesday, Nov. 10 at St. Mary’s Catholic Church with the Rev. Ray Grimes as celebrant.
Casket bearers were Tim Martinez, Wilbert Maes, Richard Maes, Jack Maes, Alex Lincon, Paul Gonzales, Alfred Trujillo and Anthony Salas.
Burial was in the Fort Lyon National Cemetery> Military Honors were conferred by American Legion Post #8 and Veterans of Foreign Wars Post #2411.
Horber Funeral Chapel was in charge of arrangements.
