Dear Editor:

The following information is provided on the financial condition of the Bent County
    Revenues and Expenditures:

    2006 — revenues $113,354; expenditures $151,009; deficit $37,655.

    2007 — revenues $120,775; expenditures $138,620; deficit $17,845.

In 2006 and 2007 the Cemetery District reduced the mil levy by two mils. For 2008 the mil levy was increased by the two mils. This tax increase the taxpayers will see when 2008 axes are paid in full in 2009.

Based upon 2007 published budget and population information, the Bent County/Las Animas Cemetery District spends at a minimum double the amount per capita as other valley districts.

In 2007 there were 18 burials and eight cremations. My assessment of the overall operation of the cemetery district is the expenditures represent an attempt to create a full-time operation out of a part-time operation at best. There is at least one half of the year when there is tremendous down time.
