The team of Brittney Dickerson, Jerrica Mallard, Alisha Pettitt, and Ashley Tague went into the Saturday final with the top time  from Friday's preliminary round and they made that hold up on Saturday.
     They blasted the competition winning the gold medal on Saturday by nearly a second.

   Las Animas baseball standout Kyle Eck was ranked first nationally last week in slugging percentage, it was reported on the Maxpreps.com prep web site.
    At the same time, he was ranked fifth nationally in batting, with a glossy .676 batting average.

    “We ran out of fishing rods and reels before we finished signing up all the kids,” said state wildlife officer Steve Kiefer.  He had brought 98 fishing rods for free distribution.

   Borrowing a horse, finding a hazer, and making last minute travel arrangements proved very profitable for PRCA cowboy K.C. Jones, Decatur, Texas, formerly of Las Animas. 
    K.C. was given a last-minute invitation to compete in the 22nd Annual Dodge National Circuit Finals Rodeo held March 19-22, in Pocatello, Idaho.
     Jones cashed in on the opportunity and won the title of National Steer Wrestling Champion with prizes that included a trophy belt buckle, cash totaling $11,871 and the keys to a 2008 Dodge truck to be used for a year.

  “We have just shown a lack of experience," said Coulter about the dismal week for the Cards. "We just aren't hitting the ball, and we are looking at way too many good pitches. We have a lot of work to do," added Coulter.

 McClave track team tested for the first time last weekend at regional meet held in Lamar.

 "It is going to take us some time. We only had half of our girls competing and with all six of our boys playing baseball too, we  know that it is going to take some time to get them in track shape. 

It was a reasonably successful start for the Cards, as they split
 with Holly, losing the first game 14-8, then coming back to bomb Holly in the second 14-4. Both games were five-inning contests.

   After last year's tremendous success with both the boys and girls' teams, one state champion relay team for the girls and Jade Downey, state champion in the 300 hurdles, plus numerous state placings, the McClave track team looks, again, to be one of the top area teams.

The Trojans out blasted Cripple Creek 17 – 7 in the their opener, then was blanked by Eads in a 10 – 0 loss on Saturday.
    In between, on Friday afternoon, the home team played small ball to edge Elbert County 3 – 1.

 The McClave Lady Cardinals lost their chance to win a fourth state championship when they suffered a heart-breaking 40 - 35 loss to Briggsdale in the semi-final. Playing in Colorado Springs, the Dick Peecher-coached team defeated Hi Plains in the opening round. After their loss to Briggsdale, the Lady Cards bounced back to defeat Crested Butte 61 - 41 to win the third-place trophy. The McClave girls basketball team finished their season with a sparkling 23 - 3 record.
