The McClave volleyball season got off on a positive note, as the Lady Cards hammered Cheyenne Wells Thursday in both their season opener and their home opener for the 2009 season. McClave swept the Lady Tigers in three 25-17, 25-14, 25-13.

After overcoming first game nerves, the Cards broke open a 7-7 tie in game one and really never looked back in in squashing the Tigers. In both games two and three, McClave got out to early leads and cruised to victory. It was a balanced team effort for the Cards, as five different hitters rammed home kills in the three games. Junior Karlee Stuart led the way with 10 kills, but Adrianne Cline was the most proficient with eight kills and no hitting errors. Junior Sydney Curley had four kills, along with senior Anna Kuhns. Setter Melissa Navarette even got in on the act, knocking down two kills in the match. Navarette was particularly effective for the Cards at the net, as she had 18 assists with only one setting error.

Defensively, it was libero Brittney Dickerson leading the way with six digs. Dickerson also hammered home three ace serves to lead the team in that category as well.

"This is just a fun team to coach," said McClave head coach Brianne Howe. "They are a team in the truest sense of the word. They really seem to play for one another out there. We don't have one go-to-player like last year but we have such good overall balance. They really enjoy working and playing together."
