The McClave Lady Cardinals moved to 15-1 on the year and 5-0 in District 2 play with weekend victories over Cheyenne Wells and Walsh.
Their 68-27 win over Cheyenne Wells on Friday night gave them their unblemished record in district play, while their 61-45 win over Walsh Saturday was a non-divisional match-up.
The Lady Cards had all offensive gears running Friday when they jumped out to a 44-14 halftime lead. McClave was able to generate points off their defense, as well as their fast break, knocking down over 50% of their shots from the field in the first half. With three girls in double figures at halftime, the Cardinals relaxed a bit during the second half, scoring only 24 points in the half.
Sophomore Karlee Stuart had a season-high 19 points to lead the way offensively, scoring inside and out. Junior Adrianne Cline had her best night of the season as well, knocking down 16 points and corralling 10 boards.
Jerrica Mallard added 14, while handing out seven assists and grabbing seven steals. "The first half was pretty to watch. We had some great passes, saw the floor well, and shot extremely well. That is fun to watch when you see basketball played like that," said Cardinal head coach Dick Peecher.
Saturday's performance was far from that, as an upstart Walsh team came out and played with a lethargic, poor shooting McClave team. McClave took a 16-9 lead after the first stanza, but saw Walsh score the next eight points to take a 17-16 lead. McClave led only 28-23 at halftime, but opened things up a bit in the third quarter with a 17-10 run. Cline had another good night, scoring 14 points and taking down 11 rebounds. Seniors Shelby Coen and Jerrica Mallard added a dozen points apiece, while Karlee Stuart chipped in 11 in a balanced scoring effort.
"We learned a lot from our performance against Walsh. It is so important to be ready and come out hard every time that you hit the floor. Walsh played us hard, out-hustled us for a good part of the evening. There were several little things we weren't doing well defensively. I got us there a little late, so I am partly to blame. I just want this team to be the best they can be and work hard every night. We struggle at times with that but that is our goal. We will get better," added Peecher.
