Las Animas Softball just ended its season with a surprising tournament that saw the lower-seeded teams upset the teams that had dominated them in league play.

    The third-seed TNT team defeated league champs Dairy Queen in the finale to win the tourney, reported softball organizer Mike Montoya.

    Then the fifth-seed BCCF team, which had to win a qualifying berth to get into the tournament, won the consolation bracket to finish third. BCCF had been winless in league play.

    While the league play was important, it was the tournament play that won the coveted T-shirts awarded to the all-tourney team, Montoya told the Democrat. the T-shiirts designate them as All-Tourney players for 2008 in LA Softball.

    TNT — Gary Miller, Jeremy Pryor,Jim Pryor.
    DQ — D. J. Magana, Ron Cardoza, James Tyler.
    BCCF — Steven Salazar, Jeff Varner.
    Alibi — Dale Arrona.
    JR Liquor — Wayne Burns.

    Montoya said the softball league started play on June 4 and competed throughout the summer, ending their season the weekend before last with the tournament.  He said the league always starts in early June so it can complete its season around Aug. 1.
