The oldest continuous fair in the State of Colorado celebrated 147 years last week and earned a nod from Mother Nature in the process, having avoided a torrential downpour two days after events concluded at the Arkansas Valley Fair in Rocky Ford.

As a whole, the fair was successful, thanks in large part to the continued support of southeastern Colorado residents and a slew of volunteers who make the fair possible each year.

The fair, which ran from August 13-17, featured a variety of activities that catered to all ages. The event kicked off with the annual wake-up breakfast Wednesday morning, which set the tone for a week filled with family-friendly entertainment, from the iconic rodeo events to livestock shows, carnival rides, and live music performances.

Agriculture took center stage, as it has for several decades during the early days of the fair. 4-H and FFA members from across Otero County exhibited their prized livestock, including cattle, pigs, sheep, and goats, in highly competitive shows.

The fair’s exposition building was filled with an array of products, including fresh produce, canned goods, and hand-crafted items, all reflecting the region’s prowess. The famous Rocky Ford melons, a staple of the area, were in abundance, and visitors were offered a free watermelon, a long standing tradition dating back to the days of George Swink 147 years ago.

Beyond agriculture, the fair offered a wide range of entertainment. The rodeo events were particularly popular. The demolition derby, always a crowd favorite, saw cars smashing and live music echoed through the fairgrounds with performances from local bands.

The midway, with its colorful carnival rides and games, provided endless fun for families, while food vendors served up classic fair treats like funnel cakes, corn dogs, and lemonade.

The Arkansas Valley Fair, first held in 1877, is the oldest continuous fair in Colorado. It is an annual event that celebrates the agricultural heritage and community spirit of the Arkansas Valley, offering a wide range of activities including livestock shows, rodeos, parades, and more.
