Things to keep in mind when shopping for a bicycle helmet:

- Bicycle helmets should not be used for other activities such as snowboarding or skateboarding, said Joe Fucile, owner of the Bicycle Clinic in South Weymouth. Freestyle helmets with hard shells are manufactured for these sports.

- If you crash and the helmet hits the ground, throw it away and replace it. Many bicycle shops offer a discount on a new helmet if you bring in the damaged one.

- Adjust your helmet before every use because straps can move, compromising the fit and protection.

- Manufacturers design helmets for adults, youth and toddlers. Don't use a helmet that's too big or too small for your head.
