Combining five different high schools, including Las Animas High School, the La Junta High School swim team competed Friday in the Fairview Invitational in Boulder in the first swim meet of the season.


  Alongside swimmers from La Junta, Swink, Lamar, and Cheraw, Las Animas swimmers Gabrielle Gonzales, Larabeth Vanek, and Rachelle Siefkas competed against much larger high schools, placing seventh out of eight teams in attendance with 93 total team points. Host Fairview placed first overall with 424 total team points.


  Individually, Gonzales competed in four different events, placing 11th in the 200 yard breaststroke with a time of 2:39.25 and 21st in the 50 yard freestyle with a time of 33.56. She placed 20th as part of the Lady Tiger 200 yard medley relay alongside fellow LAHS swimmer Rachelle Siefkas in 2:28.43 and was part of the La Junta 200 yard freestyle relay that was disqualified, along with Las Animas’ Larabeth Vanek.


  Siefkas swam 11th overall in the 200 yard butterfly relay with a time of 2:24.96, 15th in the 400 yard freestyle relay in 4:51.71, and 20th in the 100 yard butterfly in 1:22.08.


  Vanek was 24th in the 100 yard freestyle with a time of 1:47.05.


  The team traveled to Pueblo Central High School on Tuesday and will head to Pueblo East on Dec. 18 beginning at 5 p.m.
