The Las Animas High School baseball team claimed the regular season Santa Fe League championship and more importantly, the top seed heading in to District 6 tournament play this weekend in splitting a doubleheader against Swink last weekend 4-1, 2-10.

The Las Animas High School baseball team claimed the regular season Santa Fe League championship and more importantly, the top seed heading in to District 6 tournament play this weekend in splitting a doubleheader against Swink last weekend 4-1, 2-10.


The Trojans earned the top seed by beating the Lions in the opening game, which counts toward district seeding, and enter tournament play 14-2 overall and 9-1 versus district opponents. Swink, by winning the second game, clinched the second overall seed (16-2, 8-2) heading in to weekend play.


In the opener, Las Animas scored twice in the first inning and scored one run in the second and fourth innings. Swink managed their lone run of the game in the third inning, giving the Trojans the 4-1 victory.
Offensively, Las Animas combined for seven hits and no errors, while Swink managed five hits to two errors.


Jesse Cebulski pitched all seven innings for LAHS, amassing eight strikeouts, while Bubba Martinez hit 3-4 from the plate and scored one run, Luis Dominguez 1-2 with one RBI, and Austin Garcia 1-1 with one RBI.
In the second game, LAHS combined for six errors to four hits, allowing 10 Swink runs. Swink meanwhile, combined for 11 hits, though also amassing several errors (5), to take the game 10-2.


"In the first game, we played solid defense and had timely hitting. It was a great effort from the mound from Jesse Cebulski," said Las Animas High School head coach Carl Lindauer. "Game two was the opposite from the first game. It was sloppy and there were a lot of errors from both teams. We did not play very well."


Nevertheless, LAHS earned a first round bye in District 6 tournament play and will host semi-final and championship play Saturday at Sonny Smith Field. Opening round games took place Tuesday afternoon.


The Trojans will play the winner of fourth seed Crowley County and fifth seed County Line (McClave/Wiley) at 10 a.m. Saturday, followed by Tuesday's winner between second seed Swink and seventh seed Springfield against the winner of third seed Rocky Ford and sixth seed Fowler at 12 p.m. Winners from the morning games will play for the District 6 championship at 3 p.m.


Additionally, Saturday is being celebrated as Trojan Appreciation Day. All people who wear blue and white will get free admission to the game.
