The Otero Junior College campus is buzzing with activity this week as students begin arriving on campus to purchase books and make final arrangements for class schedules. Registration for classes will continue through this week at the Student Services Center, located at 2001 San Juan Ave. with classes beginning on Monday, Aug. 18.
According to Jeff Paolucci, vice president of Student Services, there is still time to enroll.
"We are coming down to the wire, but there is still room in most of our academic courses and career and technical education programs for new students," said Paolucci. "We are a one-stop-shop in Student Services, so if students come in this week, we will personally help them enroll in the college, chart out a course of study, get registered and start the financial aid process," he said. "If students have already registered for classes and need to make schedule changes; we can also help them with that."
Students who are enrolled, or plan to enroll in any of the OJC Hybrid courses, should plan to be present at the first class meeting. The first class serves as the course orientation as well as an opportunity for students and instructors to meet face-to-face and have questions answered about the Learning Management System that will be used to deliver a portion of the course materials and provide communication.
Registration for fall semester will continue through the first week of classes; the week of Aug. 18. The Student Services Center is open this week, Monday through Thursday, 7:30 a.m. to 7 p.m. and on Friday from 7:30 a.m. to 5 p.m. The Student Services Center will also be open to assist students on Saturday, Aug. 16, from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. and on Sunday, Aug. 17, from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m.
The OJC Bookstore will be open Monday through Friday of this week, from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. in the Student Center. To accommodate new students coming to campus over the weekend, the bookstore will be open on Saturday, Aug. 16, from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. and Sunday, Aug. 17, from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m.
Students who are moving into the dormitories on Aug. 17 and their families are invited to a lunch in the Rattlers' Den on Aug. 17 from 12 to 2 p.m. Representatives from campus clubs will be available to talk about ways to get involved on campus.
Other activities planned to welcome students to campus include a Jump Start orientation to be held in the Learning Commons Collaboration Room in Wheeler Hall. During a half hour session, students will learn how to log on to the OJC system; navigate D2L, the college's Learning Management System; and print off a copy of their class schedule. After this session, campus tours will be provided to help students find their buildings and classrooms. Sessions and tours will begin every half hour from 2 to 5 p.m. No registration is necessary.
