Arkansas Valley Hospice Inc., in-conjunction with the Center for American Values Inc., Pueblo, Colorado, (co-founded by Medal of Honor Recipient Drew Dix), is offering a school contest as part of the We Honor Veterans program (http://www.wehonorveterans.org), a coalition between the National Hospice and Palliative Care Organization and the Department of Veterans Affairs as a way to honor veterans and bring awareness. One out of four dying Americans today is a veteran. "Of the almost 8 million veterans enrolled in the VA Health Care System, about 3 million live in rural areas. Rural veterans do not always live near VA health care services. This is the biggest challenge facing many rural communities." – WHV Elementary, middle and high school students in Otero, Crowley and Bent County are eligible to participate in the contest. Students can participate individually, as a small group through a class assignment or as an out-of-school-opportunity. Participants can enter a poem, written piece, drawing, collage, sculpture, video, movie, poster, music or anything that creatively answers the prompt of What does HONOR mean to you?
Eight winning entries, (two elementary primary, two elementary intermediate, two middle and two high school) will receive a field trip on a chartered bus to Pueblo to take a tour through the Walk of Valor; in addition, each winning entry will receive a plaque from the Center for American Values Inc. and the presentation will be videotaped for the winner(s) and will be added to the video library at the CAV. We Honor winners will be honored with a field trip on Thursday, April 9, 2015. A limited number of honorable mentions will be selected to participate in this event; as well, principals, teachers and chaperones will be invited.
Packets with all information, including a contest overview and entry form will be delivered to all schools in Otero, Crowley and Bent County. All entries and projects are due on or before Feb. 27, 2015. Refer to packet information for entry location information.
