Matt Torrez and Caylan Garcia combined for 39 points in last Saturday's Santa Fe League contest pitting the Las Animas High School boys' basketball team against visiting Rocky Ford, despite the Trojans eventually falling to the Meloneers 66-63.

Las Animas (3-5) buried themselves in a deep hole after the first quarter of play, outscored by the Meloneers 22-7, but got themselves back in the game entering the half, having outshot Rocky Ford 19-11 in the second quarter to go into the break down 33-26.

Rocky Ford pushed the lead back to double digits, however, after the third quarter, leading 49-39, and fended off a late Trojan rally in which LAHS scored 24 fourth quarter points to Rocky Ford's 17 to mark the final, 66-63.

Torrez led the way offensively for the Trojans with 20 points, followed closely by Garcia's 19. Michael Lopez added nine points, Josh Japhet seven, Justin Dean five, and Jaxson Spady three.

The eventual Player of the Game, Dean added a team high nine rebounds and four assists, one steal, and one block.

"Justin contributes in all areas of the game," said Las Animas head coach Allen Magana. "He is a leader and a wonderful team player."

Las Animas currently sits 3-5 overall and 2-3 versus Santa Fe League opponents.

The Trojans traveled to Swink on Tuesday and will head to Rye tomorrow (Friday) beginning at 5 p.m.
