The Las Animas High School girls' basketball team fell short in two league road games played last week to fall to 2-8 on the season.

LAHS fell to Swink last Tuesday evening 46-37 and to Rye Friday evening 43-25.

Despite playing Swink even for three quarters, the Lady Trojans' downfall came early, the result of a 17-5 first quarter deficit. LAHS matched Swink's eight second quarter points and pulled to within five points after the third quarter, 30-25, with a 12-5 third quarter advantage. Swink however, won the fourth quarter, 16-12, and eventually the game 46-37.

Ashlie Stwalley and Leah Vida led the way for the Lady Trojans with 10 points each, followed by Angelica Martinez six, Angelica Melendez three, Gracie Davis three, and Raya Martin one.

AJ Foulk pulled in five rebounds and Melendez seven steals.

Swink's Hope Roweth led all scorers with 12 points.

In Friday's game in Rye, Las Animas failed to score double digits in each quarter, resulting in a wire to wire victory for the homestanding Lady Thunderbolts.

LAHS trailed 11-6 after the first quarter, 22-12 at the half and 34-17 after three quarters en route to a 43-25 loss.

Cara Miller and Vida each scored eight points, followed by Martinez four, Hailey Stwalley two and Danielle Gonzalez two.

Vida added five rebounds and four steals in the effort.

Rye's Bryna Burns led all scorers with 11 points.

Las Animas will travel to Walsenburg to take on John all Friday evening at 4 p.m. and will host Swink Saturday beginning at 2 p.m.
