The children and teachers at the Child Development Services Head Start Preschool in Las Animas planted a rose bush in honor of Head Start's 50th anniversary May 18.

Fifty years ago, President Lyndon B. Johnson stood in the White House Rose Garden to announce the creation of Project Head Start, a federal effort designed to ensure preschool children across the nation received a quality early childhood experience and successful transition into kindergarten.

Since its creation in 1965, Head Start has served 32 million children and their families, providing comprehensive early learning services that get children ready for kindergarten and provide families information to empower them to advocate for their child's success in education and life. Locally, the OJC CDS Head Start Preschool serves children 3 years to 5 years old and is enrolling for the 2015-2016 school year. For further information, call 384-3180 or 384-3100.

Head Start's complete approach to high-quality early learning has been life changing for children and families in Las Animas for over 40 years.
