Otero celebrates National HSI Week
Otero College celebrated National Hispanic Serving Institutions (HSI) Week last week, September 12-16, HSIs are defined as institutions of higher education that have an enrollment of undergraduate, full-time equivalent, students that are at least 25% Hispanic students at the end of the award year immediately preceding the date of application. Enrollment data shows that in 2021, Otero was at 39.5%. Recognized HSIs are eligible for federal grants to expand their educational opportunities for Hispanic students.

Melon Chunkin’ contest Sept. 17
Tri-County Family Care Center will be sponsoring a Melon Chunkin’ contest on Saturday, September 17 at the Arkansas Valley Fairgrounds from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m.
Fox Foundation 2022 grant applications available online
The Jonathan & Shari Fox Family Foundation has announced that the 2022 grant applications are now available online and will be accepted through October 28 2022. The grants are awarded annually and will be announced near year’s end.
Hirakata Farms honored at State Fair
History Colorado and the Colorado Department of Agriculture have expanded their annual Centennial Farms and Ranches commemoration to include several new categories. On August 26, at the Colorado State Fair in Pueblo, 10 recipients received honors that celebrate at least 100 years of resilience, perseverance and sustainability; and most notably, that acknowledge the contributions of agribusinesses, community land practices and families.

Experience war and calamity at Bent’s Old Fort
The public is invited to join the inhabitants of Bent’s Old Fort Friday, September 2, from 1 to 5:30 p.m. and September 3 from 8 a.m. to 5:30 p.m. to experience the sights and sounds of Bent, St. Vrain, & Company in 1847.
