SALIDA – Roy Vaughan, who retired as the Bureau of Reclamation manager of the Fryingpan- Arkansas Project in 2021, was awarded the Bob Appel Friend of the Arkansas Award Thursday at the 26th annual Arkansas River Basin Water Forum.

The La Junta Police Department responded to a reports of shots fired early Thursday morning. At approximately 12:14 a.m., officers, with aid from the Otero County Sheriff’s Department, arrived on scene at a residence on the 900 block of 4th Street, where they located a 15-year-old male victim with a gunshot wound.
One newcomer is joining five returning members on the Southeastern Colorado Water Conservancy District Board of Directors. The appointments were made by a panel of District Judges in early April, and all six members were sworn into office Thursday, April 21, 2022.
Otero College will graduate 322 students on April 30, 2022, at 10 a.m. in the McDivitt Center Gym on the Otero College campus. For those unable to attend in person, the event will be streamed live on the www.otero.edu website.

Viviana Bozzi, a board certified family practitioner, has been named director of palliative care for Sangre de Cristo Community Care. Bozzi recently joined Sangre de Cristo Community Care after a 14-year career as a registered nurse for Parkview Medical Center, working in the Neuro Trauma ICU unit.
Two large fires fueled by strong winds burned last week in Bent and Otero counties, destroying two homes and threatening historic structures in its wake. Bent’s Fort, along Highway 194 in Otero County, survived the devastation, thanks largely in part to the dedication of firefighters who turned the flames away.
