A hero who lost it all— and a friend’s plea to the community

Twenty-year volunteer fire-fighter Jason Garcia helped fight the Fort Lyon Fire and aided in saving his neighbor’s house. But as the wind grew more robust and the flames spread rapidly, he was forced to witness his own home on County Road HH is Las Animas go down in flames. Now, one of his dear friends, Jennifer Alison Garcia, urges the community to band together and help through donations.

Catching up with AVCCA

April is an important month for the Arkansas Valley Community Concert Association (AVCCA), marking the end of the old season and the beginning of the new one, according to President Judy Hensley. The last concert of the 2021-2022 season will feature Sundae and Mr. Goessl on Tuesday, April 26. They sing and play pop and jazz standards from the ‘20’s through ‘50’s on guitar and melodica, a wind instrument with a keyboard. To attend this concert, you can use your 2021-2022 season ticket, you can pay $20 (adult) or $10 (student) at the door, or you can get in free by purchasing a 2022-2023 season ticket. The April 26 concert begins at 7 pm in the Ed Stafford Theater on the Otero campus. Come a little before 7 pm to purchase your 2022-2023 season ticket.

SFTD royalty candidates

Incumbents earn support of Democratic Assembly

Senator Michael Bennet became the Democratic candidate for the November 2022 Senate race at the Colorado Democratic State Assembly held Saturday on Zoom Webinar. Three potential candidates, Bennet, Karen Breslin and Dan Chapin, were nominated for this position and each had five minutes to speak to the 2044 elected delegates. In his speech, Chapin argued for the need for a primary election. He removed his name from consideration and urged all the female delegates to vote for Breslin and all the males to vote for Bennet, thus assuring both candidates at least 30% of those voting, the minimum required to be on the ballot. However, 80% of the votes went to Bennet and just 19% to Breslin.

Congressman Buck announces 2022 CO-04 Congressional Art Competition

WASHINGTON— Today, U.S. Representative Ken Buck (CO-04) announced he will start accepting submissions for the 2022 Congressional Art Competition. Each spring, the House of Representatives and the Congressional Institute sponsor a nationwide high school arts competition as an opportunity for high school students residing in the Fourth Congressional District of Colorado to showcase their talents.
