CSP investigating fatal accident near Las Animas

The Colorado State Patrol (CSP) is investigating a single vehicle rollover accident that left one man dead and a passenger injured early Saturday morning between La Junta and Las Animas. According to CSP, at 1:40 a.m., a 2019 Dogde Caravan driven by a a 41-year-old man from Rocky Ford was traveling westbound on US Highway 50 when the vehicle failed to negotiate a left curve and went off the right side of the roadway near mile marker 397.

‘Partners in Parenting’ classes in March

Parenting Classes Tri-County Family Care Center will be sponsoring “Partners in Parenting” parenting classes, Wednesday evenings, March 9th, 16th, 23rd, 30th, April 6th, 13th. The six sessions will be held at Tri-County Family Care Center, 512 ½ N Main St, Rocky Ford, 5:30 to 7:30 pm with Bea Jae Viescas as presenter. The information during the free classes will cover parenting for all ages of children.

The Arknsas Valley Conduit is coming – really!

The Arkansas Valley Conduit has been an idea in the works since the Frying Pan/Arkansas project started in the 60’s under John F. Kennedy. Chris Woodka of the Southeast Water Conservancy District has been working on it in one way or another for twenty years. Well water in Southeast Colorado contains radionucleides, since radium and uranium are naturally occurring minerals. Add to that nitrates (agriculture uses fertilizer), bacteria, selenium and iron in the alluvial aquifer. There’s a limit to what even a good water system with reverse osmosis will take out.

Burglary Epidemic plagues La Junta

When officers reponed to a reported burglary on February 7th, the incident pointed to a broader issue facing the community of La Junta, an increase in burglary and crime. Police apprehended Thirty-six-year-old Chezaray Chavez for a reported burglary at Thyme Square building at 302 Colorado Avenue.
