SE Colorado remains ‘abnormally dry’ following recent rainfall

Colorado and the Arkansas River Basin saw slight improvements in drought conditions this week with more than 13 percent of the state no longer experiencing any level of drought, according to the most recent U.S. Drought Monitor report. The report shows no drought in most of the basin’s headwaters areas, abnormally dry conditions in most of lower basin with a few patches of moderate.

New kitchen at LAHS

On Monday the health classes got to try out the newly remodeled kitchen at Las Animas High School. They are studying all the food groups and worked on prepping different kinds of fruit.

It’s good to be queen

Whether baton twirling or rock painting, singing or dancing, 17 of the region’s grand dames are expected to bring their talents to the Colorado Building on the Colorado State Fairgrounds on Sept. 1 as they vie for the title of Colorado’s Silver Queen. The contest is slated to begin at 4 p.m.

Lowman, Baker sing en route to Silver royalty

Gracia Lowman and Elvis Baker sang their way in to the hearts of judges Wednesday afternoon at the Gobin Building, emerging as the 2022 Arkansas Valley Fair queen and king, respectively. 84-year-old Lowman, a resident of Bent County Healthcare Center in Las Animas, put 76 years of school and church singing to use, wowing the crowd with her rendition of “Let There be Peace on Earth”, a song she has sung at church.
