Victim identified in area stabbing

The La Junta Police Department, with assistance from the Colorado Bureau of Investigation, continues to investigate a stabbing that left one man dead. On Friday, August 12, 2022, at approximately 6:30 a.m., the La Junta Police Department received a 911 call of a man lying in the street at the intersection of 9th Street and Santa Fe Avenue. The victim was transported to the Arkansas Regional Valley Medical Center in La Junta where he later died.

Man found dead in Otero County jail could point to larger systemic issues

On August 15, 2022, the Otero County Sheriff’s Office released a statement that said, “a 46-yearold male was found deceased in his cell by deputies.” The statement reported that Deputies and EMS provided emergency treatment. However, responders declared him deceased. The biggest takeaway from the statement was that “The incident is believed to be related to drugs.” These incidents appear to be a trend across the nation and Colorado, and we may be seeing it affect our rural communities like Otero County and Bent County. In fact, it may be worse in rural areas.

As students return to school, how will teacher shortages affect their education?

It’s been two years since the initial lockdowns of the COVID-19 Pandemic. Since then, going to school for kids has been unique and challenging. Daily, students didn’t know if class would be in person or virtual, masks were mandatory until they slowly weren’t, and the emphasis on social distancing and protocols fluctuated. However, one of the most significant pandemic-induced issues was the creation of unprecedented staff shortages across the state, especially in rural areas like Otero County and Bent County.

Local VA clinics will remain open…for now

After a successful resource fair at the La Junta Senior Center, which was packed with Veterans from a wide range of generations, all receiving a plethora of information on benefits and services, VA ECHCS (Veterans Affairs Colorado Health Care System) director Michael Kilmer broke the news that he and his team were able to prevent the closure of the VA clinics in Lamar, Burlington, Salida, and La Junta, at least for the next four years.
